It’s no secret that I absolutely loved this summer’s Godzilla film. In my review of the big-budget Godzilla film directed by Gareth Edwards I gave the film a solid A not only for bringing the most iconic kaiju in all of monster movie history back to life and back to his former glory but also for remembering that a Godzilla film is just as much about the humans as it is the monstrous devastation and action. So imagine my excitement to hear that Gareth Edwards and Legendary revealed that not only were they going to start working on a second Godzilla film but also that three of the King of Monster most legendary foes will also be in the film. That’s right! Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah were teased at during the Comic Con panel. O!M!G!O!S!H!
When the first Godzilla trailers started hitting the net before the first film, I thought that the monster flying towards the camera was Rodan. Turns out it would later be a new monster called a M.U.T.O. (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), but the idea of one of Godzilla’s classic enemies could later appear in future films still lingered in my mind. Even as I was watching the film I was hoping that some sign of Easter egg hinting at future Godzilla kaiju would appear on screen. Well, yeah – some Easter eggs did pop up on screen, but nothing that would solidly lead me to believe that one of them could be used in a potential Godzilla sequel.
Now this recent announcement has awakened the inner kaiju fan in me and has me anxiously awaiting the next Godzilla film. Of course all this is still in very, very early pre-production phase and Gareth Edwards still needs to wrap up post-production on Monsters: Dark Continent and filming on the Star Wars stand-alone film he is working on, but I can’t wait to see Edward’s Godzilla back in action alongside three monstrous companions. Hopefully, as more details arise in future post, we can keep you updated on when the next film will release and what roles, antagonist or protagonist, these three kaiju will play in the film.
